Meet the Couple of This Rainy Wedding in the North Cascades

Your first thought might not be “fun” when you think about a rainy wedding, but that’s exactly what Angelina and Nick’s North Cascades wedding was! The couple planned a sunrise-to-sunset elopement with us and although the weather was a little overcast, they got to see the North Cascades in all her moody, rainy glory!

Their wedding day started in the early morning hours before the sun rose. The weather was overcast and a little misty, but that only meant one thing – Angelina and Nick had the trail all to themselves (a wedding day win if you ask us!).

Instead of jumping right into their ceremony, the couple decided to ease into the day by wandering through the wildflower trails that led to a magical alpine lake high up in the North Cascade mountains. After spending a few private moments with just the two of them, Angelina and Nick met up with their family at a nearby location to hold their rainy wedding ceremony. They experienced another wedding day win because, again, they had the entire spot to themselves! There was not another soul in sight making for the most peaceful and private ceremony experience.

After saying “I Do”, the couple and their family headed back to the cabin where they enjoyed a beautiful brunch catered by none other than, Miere Catering. After toasts, everyone took a break to enjoy the afternoon and, when sunset rolled around, Angelina and Nick met back up with Dawn to explore a different part of the North Cascades. As they adventured around, the evening fog rolled in giving the moodiest rainy wedding vibes. Angelina and Nick were just glowing with happiness (or was it the lantern light? 🙂).

What to Do on a Rainy Wedding Day

Sometimes rainy weather is unavoidable (especially here in the PNW). Rain doesn’t have to ruin your wedding day though. Here are a few tips that can help if you experience a rainy wedding day.

Work With the Weather Forecast

Oftentimes when it rains in the Pacific Northwest, it does not rain the entire day. A big part of our job as wedding and elopement photographers is watching the weather to help you make the most of your wedding day experience. While we can’t control the weather, we can help you know when we might experience overcast skies or light rain and adjust the plan as needed. Also, keeping an open mind is always important and can help make the most out of your wedding day, regardless of the weather.

Focus on Lower Elevation Areas with Visibility

If the rain is truly unavoidable, then we recommend focusing on lower elevation areas as those tend to have more visibility. When it’s raining, clouds tend to hang a bit lower, so by focusing on trails that are not as high up in the mountains, you’ll be able to enjoy other views without having to worry about visibility. Some of our favorite lower-elevation areas are alpine lakes, wildflower fields, rivers, waterfalls, and, of course, forests! Not only does a forest help shelter you from the rain, but wandering through a forest in the rain is truly one of the most magical things in the world!

Keep an Open Mind! There is Magic in the Rain 🙂

We said it before, but keeping an open mind is one of the best things you can do on your elopement day! There is magic in the rain. A lot of times couples will feel a little overwhelmed or disappointed that they aren’t having that perfect sunny, 75-degree day. Many times though, couples who have a rainy day elopement tell us, “That was perfect. I couldn’t imagine it any other way.” They end up loving the moody, romantic vibes of their experience and their photos. (Because let’s be real, overcast skies do give the best lighting!).

Five Things to Pack for a Rainy Wedding in Washington State

If a rainy wedding day is in your forecast, here are a few things you have in your backpack!

  • Clear umbrellas – we love the more dome-like ones for couples and the wider ones so guests can share
  • A rain jacket – (of course!)
  • A change of socks – soggy socks are NEVER fun and having an extra pair to change into can help keep your feet warm in the event your feet do start to get wet!
  • Extra layers – if the weather happens to be cooler, we recommend wearing leggings under your dress or pants to stay warm. Having a puffy jacket, mittens, or hand warmers on hand is also a good idea.
  • Water-resistant shoes – we recommend a good pair of hiking boots and especially love Blundstones)
